Yoga for Emotional Well-Being

Emotional well-being comes from a sense that we have the skills and resources to face life’s inevitable ups and downs. When we don’t have this resilience, we can feel like we are drowning or being buffeted on a stormy sea between extreme emotions of anxiety, elation to depression and avoidance of life.

Yoga asana (postures) give us a safe way to explore our emotional states as well as the means to strengthen our body, mind and spirit.

Join Cynthia for a nourishing practice of yoga in support of finding contentment under any condition. Open to all levels.

The knees are a common area that causes chronic or occasional pain. Each year, 11 million Americans complain to their doctors about knee-pain, and orthopedic surgeons are said to operate more often on the knees than on any other body part. Yoga can be an excellent solution to address many knee issues – and help stop them from turning into a complicated problem. In this workshop, you'll explore the roots of knee issues in the hips and ankles; practice means for stabilizing the knee without sacrificing range of motion through yoga asana; and learn strategies for managing your knees in general yoga classes. There are stages of our life or times in our life when it seems like the world is on fire. Some of these transitions are hormonal (adolescence, peri-menopause) and others are created through external circumstances that ask us to go beyond our perceived limits.  When our internal fire blazes too strongly it can burn us out and leave us anxious, angry, exhausted and overwhelmed. The secret is to cultivate a water crucible for these fiery transformations to take place in. How can we cultivate this flame of vitality without letting it burn us?

Yoga for Women's Health

A woman’s life goes through three distinct transformations in not just her body but her identity and self. The first one comes with menstruation, the second with having children and the last with the cessation of menstruation or menopause. When women ignore the needs of their physical and emotional body it can lead to illness and disease. Thanks to the generosity and genius of B.K.S. Iyengar’s daughter, Geeta Iyengar, we have a blueprint for how to use yoga as a practice to live our lives more deeply, more fully as a woman. Retreat is an integral part of all spiritual practices. A true retreat provides the support for the practitioner to let go of their identities in the outside world and go more deeply into their practice.  We are supported by the physical space, by our teacher, by our community of fellow students, by the meals that are lovingly prepared for us and the practices that we do. Unlike a vacation, on a retreat we focus on activities that nourish our spiritual selves. We make space and time for practice, for contemplation and for deep rest. The insights, perspective and experience we have on retreat, in turn creates a wider, deeper and more luminous container for us to live in.

Yoga for Backcare: Hips & Lower Back

Lower back pain is interactive with the strength and mobility of the hips. Sitting for long periods of time at a desk or in a car leads to tight, weak hips and lower back problems. Even the activities that we do such as walking, running and biking, contribute to hip tightness without the balancing effect of mobility and openness in the hips.

In this workshop, Cynthia will help you explore the interaction between your hips and lower back in an effort to manage pain and improve well-being and performance. This course will give you exercises you can do to manage pain as well as practices for preventing future pain.

Working with Difficult Emotions: Yoga & Meditation Daylong

Saturday, June 4th from 9:00-4:00pm with lunch break

The joy and difficulty of human life is found in in the expression and feeling of emotions. Connection, caring, love, compassion and wisdom are natural expressions which can become blocked when the beautiful monsters of anger, lust, greed and jealousy emerge. Rather than suppressing these emotions, masking them or running away from them, can we use them as friends on our path to awakening?

Join Tenzin Namsel and Cynthia Bates on a daylong exploration of building friendliness and connection with our difficult emotions in a safe environment. The day will include a mixture of yoga, meditation instruction, practice and Q&A/discussion. Open to all. No experience with yoga or meditation required.

A portion of donations will go toward Tsokyni Rinpoche's Nepal Nun project also supported by Pema Chodron: http://www.tsoknyinepalnuns.org/

Suggested Donation: $65-$108
(No one will be turned away)
