Utthita Trikonasana (Extended Triangle Pose) is arguably THE fundamental standing pose (after Tadasana, Mountain Pose)
Why is there such a focus on standing poses in Iyengar yoga?
Because they teach us to stand on our own two feet
Because they teach us that the actions of the legs and arms are fundamental to uplifting our chest and heart
At the same time, the lifting of the chest and heart must RECEIVE the support from the legs and arms
So, this is no American myth of pulling oneself up by their bootstraps. This is what Birjoo Mehta recently described as "dharmic action" or sustainability, where all the parts all support the whole.
